Start frikkin stop....

Post by BigFatPaulie » Sat Oct 05, 2019 1:52 pm

Is there any way to reign in the start stop system other than turning it off ?
Was in traffic yesterday and stood with foot on brake in gear or neutral, and the engine stops
.. a few seconds later the car in front moves 2 feet and my car starts up again - even though my foot is still on the brake.
5 sends pass, we haven't moved and the engine cuts off again, seems very wasteful and annoying.
This happens dozens of times until I turn the ss off.

Same here, do you have DSG automatic ?
When the engine stops, I move the gear lever into neutral, so you can stop pressing the brake. and a green brake symbol shows, gearlever is blocked in N.
When you see movement, just put your foot on the brake, and move the lever to drive, when you release brake pressure, move the steering wheel or the car in front of you moves... it is the old song again... engine starts up again.
still annoying, but less stressful for your right leg.

IIRC the start/stop is supposed to detect when the car in front moves off and starts the engine.
I haven't seen it on my one yet, so maybe only certain models.
On the whole I find that start/stop doesn't get in the way too much except in queues of traffic that is slowly inching forward, then stopping. In this case, the starter seems to be running more than the engine and I then turn it off. the rest of the time the behaviour seems right.

Mine doesn't do this. I tried again yesterday.
Stop at railway crossing, hold on brake, stop/start cuts engine.
Select neutral, handbrake on. Foot off brake pedal.
gates open, Select Drive, handbrake off...... NOTHING. I had to select Park and restart, to hoots from behind.

As soon as you select drive, and release the footbrake the engine fires up... unless you have disabled start/stop you have a fault !

By that point I have the car on handbrake, not foot brake, to save having to hold the pedal down and dazzle the driver behind.

OK. Let's clarify.
Stop at railway crossing, hold on brake, stop/start cuts engine.
Select neutral, handbrake on. Foot off brake pedal.

gates open, APPLY FOOT BRAKE, Select Drive, handbrake off...... NOTHING. I had to select Park and restart, to hoots from behind.
