Just found this on the SEAT Website for the Arona map updates
Looks as if it is version 1030
Think most of us will have version 0820

I am downloading all the versions, and then will check which one to use and update it tomorrow and report back.
Are we eligible for this as it says Do not rewrite on the original SD card if you are not absolutely sure that you have the MapCare service!
Rewriting the SD card without hiring the MapCare service may cause data loss!

Surely we only need to download the Europe 1 file?

No Idea if we have map care or not. but usually for the 1 first year the updates are free.
Otherwise it is just another piss poor Manufacturer, which is ripping off the consumer.
if TOM TOM and Other Sat Nav Manufacturers can supply lifetime updates free, then car sat nav systems can be the same.
it's about time the Consumer started to pressure the car manufacturers to change.

I am going to write the data to a new SD Card and try that first.
it is only formatted with FAT32 so should be OK.
I am not going to write over my original SD Card.
I will take a backup of my original card.
See if making a backup to another SD card will work. will let you know

Agree 100%, especially when half the time the dealers have no idea how the map update works on cars.

Good idea regarding trying a new SD card first. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work as in the instructions it says to delete the contents of the original SD card before extracting the new data to it. I'll try the same I think.

Looks like my map version is 0915

Just tried it in mine with an SD card and it doesn't work. Could be the card I guess but i'm thinking that the original card is somehow coded to the car.

I'd be interested if it works for you Gazza

So, I've done some more research and came across the Ateca equivilant of this forum which has this thread - https://www.atecaforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2736

To summarise, the original card IS linked to the car and there is also a file to copy from the original maps to the updated maps, although i'll try without copying the file first to see if this is different for the Arona or they've fixed this as it's not mentioned in the update instructions

I'll give this a whirl when time allows.

So, I've successfully completed the update. It's actually map version 1115 now, not 1030. Done using the Europe 1 download from here - https://www.seat.com/owners/your-seat/n ... arona.html

The update will only work off the original SD card and as mentioned in my last post, a file does need to be copied from the original backed up map to the new updated map files on the SD card.

The file to be copied is MAPS/EEC/EEC_WLD/OVERALL.NDS

I successfully updated to Map Bundle 5, version 1120 downloaded from the Volkswagen site following the instructions in the above mentioned Ateca post. The maps take up about half the original space so probably are not as extensive in coverage. Nonetheless, my short term needs are the UK and possibly France, Belgium.

I didn't have a spare SD card but I have ordered one. I backed up the original card by copying the file structure. However I used Easus Todo Backup 11.5 Free to do a sector by sector backup in addition. I am hoping this copies all the card hidden information as well.

When the new card arrives:
  1. I will try is Easus Partition Master 13.0 which has a "clone" facility. I will use it to clone the current SD card (1120) and see if that works.
  2. I will try formatting the new card, sector backing up the current one (1120) and restoring that sector backup onto the new one to see if that works.
Notes:

The bundle is version 1120. I think this might be a year out of date though even though it is the latest.

Backup is free but Partition Master is a limited time use.

Did you have to copy the OVERALL.NDS file?

I'd be interested to know if you are successful with the clone to another SD card.

I copied it to the new maps directory on my PC first. I didn't try without it, assuming it was necessary based on what I had read.

I will post back probably next week when I get the card.

I received my card and tried various thing but none worked. Further investigation led me to the conclusion that each card has a unique serial number that is used to generate a key file on the card. That key file is checked together with the card by the navigation software. Although the card might be an exact clone, the serial number will be different. So a cloned card's key file is wrong for that card and hence the navigation software will not see the card as valid.

One way to check is to delete the files in the non map directory part of the card (you have a backup, right!) one at a time and see which one it uses. I might try that one day.... but feel free :-)

I have 3:
  • .dropbox.device,
  • EUMONBMP.SYS and
  • {DB08E35B-BF2E-4307-9556-B1755D333757}.CBM
Could someone check if your .CBM file has the same name (it looks like a GUID in software terms)? If each card has a different name then I would hazard a guess that the file name is the "key", or the contents are the "key" that unlocks the sat nav software.
