Towbar

Post by Bob@Burton » Tue Sep 11, 2018 4:58 am

Hi all, has anyone had any experience of having a towbar fitted, specifically in connection with the electrics. In past experience, all my previous cars have been connected using a by-pass relay with the socket connected using scotchlock connectors to the existing taillight wiring.

I am being advised to use a model specific wiring kit and have the cars software reprogrammed to ensure all functionality remains. This is only being used to tow a trailer but the specific kit involves an additional cost of £200. £450 verses £650 which is quite a jump. The towbar fitter also warned me about any future warrantee issues from Seat if the specific kit was not used.

Any thoughts?

Lot of money to lose if it goes wrong in the future
Bite the Bullet have it done by seat approved to keep your warranty
Or look at if you need a trailer hire a van or roof box

Does anyone know if a 2019 Seat Arona needs reprogramming after fitting a towbar with correct wiring from the towbar fitted

Yes it does, the towbar fitter said he spent as much time with his laptop programming as fitting the towbar!! Even when I picked the car up there were faults with the Bind Spot Info and Cross Traffic Alert turning themselves off every time the car was restarted. These were codes that were not on the list from the German electric kit supplier. It meant time spent back at the fitter with him on the phone while the specialist went through about 4 lines of code.

All sorted now, the days when I fitted a simple angle Iron towbar and spliced a 7 pin wiring kit into the cars lights are long gone now. The towbar bit is easier but the electrics require the kit and knowledge.

Has anyone requested a detachable tow bar to be fitted at the time of ordering? I’m just wondering if it will be fitted at the factory when the car is built or if the dealer is going to fit it.
