Apple Car Play/Android Auto Problems

Hi, I’ve got a 2019 FR Arona, had it for 15 months, very pleased with everything. Recently however it’s developed car play android auto problems, My phones connected via USB and its always worked fine however it’s started randomly disconnecting, at the time I had an android phone so I disconnected and paired with an iPhone and still had the same problem. I’ve also used different USB cables but again not made any difference, problem still persists.
From what I’ve read on this forum this seems to be a common issue, but I can’t find anything that talks about it being fixed, can anyone help please? My car is booked in to a main dealer but from the comments I’ve read I’m not too hopeful.
Is there a fix to this please?
Thank you very much.

We've had the same issue in my wifes 2019 Arona.

Different cables...USB ports replaced...software updates...new headunit, problem is still there.

At the end of our tether with it. Have video evidence of it happening but dealership is refusing to accept there is a fault still.

At the point of opening a case with the ombudsman as we've been back and forth for months with them and have requested a rejection of the vehicle back in early July, having only bought the car late March...which has been denied, going against the Consumer Rights Act of 2015.

They blame our phones and cables...yet the same phones and cables worked flawlessly in the Seat Leon courtesy cars we had whilst the Arona was back with them for diagnostics and repairs. Work just fine in my 2018 Seat Leon estate too.

Definitely a software issue with the running gear in the Arona, it's the only common denominator in the fault occuring.

Avoid Sytner Select.

I've yet to try to sort out my car's inability to connect my iPhone 12 via wireless CarPlay.

Strangely, its actually worked previously, and still does with my partner's iPhone SE2. But one day it simply stopped connecting to my phone. Reconnection attempts result in a message stating it's unable to connect. I am left with trying a complete reset of the system in the future, losing all my Profile settings in the process, and with no guarantee it'll actually work. (I have completely reset my iPhone to Factory, so it's not the phone.)

The difference is that with the wireless CarPlay, plugging it in using a USB cable actually works for me. But despite being able to utilise CarPlay via cable, it's still wrong, wireless should work, but doesn't.

It has to be said, these MIB units really are a bit rubbish.

Update, I’ve ordered an Apple certified USB lead and I’m going to try that when it arrives later today, I don’t think that it’ll make any difference but at least it’s something else to try! The only “workaround” I can think of is pairing my phone to a Bluetooth speaker in the car, at least I can listen to Audible.

This whole business seems crazy, I can’t believe why main dealers appear to be quite happy to say that it can’t be fixed, or find the problem!

For reference, the dealership I am referring to is a used car dealership, not a Seat dealership.

We took the car to our closest Seat dealership for them to try and diagnose but it didn't fault when there (the joys of intermittent faults). But they applied a software update, however that didn't help. Nor has the new headunit.

There's something going on with the software in the Arona headunits is all I can think of now. Like I say, our phones and cables work just fine in other Seat's.

Thanks very much for this, it’s pretty much what I did to pair up when I first got the car and it worked fine for well over a year but of late it’s started playing up where it connects fine and then for no apparent reason disconnects. Sometimes if I unplug the usb lead and then plug it back in again it reconnects and works for maybe 10/15 mins and then disconnects again, sometimes it flatly refuses to reconnect and I can’t use it for the rest of the journey. Occasionally I can drive for say 30 minutes and it works fine, but that is only the odd time, mostly it just carries on disconnecting.
I am booked in at a main Seat dealer in a couple of weeks so I’ll see what happens then.
Thanks again for your help.

Apple Car Play etc (update) The problem seems as though it maybe sorted. I took advice about getting Apple Certified usb leads and have been using this for the last week or so, and it has been fine, car play works perfectly. My Arona was booked in at a main Seat dealer for this Friday so I’ve discussed it with them and rescheduled the appointment to early January just in case this is “a false dawn!” The person at Seat did actually say that he wasn’t surprised, a lot of people buy cheap leads but they’re just not up to the job. He said that they always use proper Apple leads when testing, that might be why some people are having this problem but miraculously corrects when going to a dealer!

Many thanks for everyones input and I’ll keep you informed.

Always best to use Apple cables wherever possible. I know, everything is always good with hindsight!

A lot, and I mean a lot of cheap non-MFi Lightning cables sold by retailers are only for charging. This done to reduce costs (copper is expensive, so the data line is often not even there). As most people use cables to charge devices now as syncing is done wirelessly or over the cloud, these manufacturers get away with it. Also, most aren't doing anything wrong as they usually label them "iPhone Charging Cable" or similar with no mention of data.

In Apple cables (and MFi certified cables), there is actually a small circuit board in the USB plug side. The circuit negotiates charging speed with the device which is why charging is always faster, and safer with an Apple cable. Of course it always includes the data line too. Non-MFi cables are split into 2 groups; restricted constant charging - the lowest charge rate used by Apple, or the less safe unrestricted charging meaning they are more likely to damage the device. Generally known stores like Primark's cables are the former, and market stall and pound shop cables are the latter.

Fingers crossed you've sorted it. And do yourself a favour and recycle those cheap and nasty cables, your iPhone will thank you for it.

Thanks for this, I really wasn’t aware of the difference in leads/cables etc, just “assumed” - which really is a dangerous think to do! I’ve now been educated and I hope that others who’ve experienced this problem will now know, use decent leads, there is a difference!

I’m going to try a new lead to connect my Motorola tomorrow to use Android Auto, it will be interesting to see how that goes, that’s why I’ve not cancelled my main dealer appointment, just postponed it so I can see what happens. All I’ll say at the moment is that it looks hopeful but no more than that. There appears to be too many others out there experiencing similar problems. I’ll see how the new lead goes with Android Auto and do another update.

Android Auto Update:- Disconnected iPhone and went back to my Android Motorola, set it up with my new (proper) usb lead and it’s worked fine today, all apps, Audible, Waze, telephone etc., was only a relatively short journey but so far so good. I’m still not totally convinced that this is a cure but fingers crossed. I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Morning. Greetings from Singapore! I am driving a 2018 Seat Arona too and occasionally gets disconnected from my iPhone from Apple CarPlay. Having driven a couple of European cars I realised that sometimes the cause might be a weak/old car battery that is due for replacement. I have experienced in two Citroens and the Seat Arona that after changing the battery, the Apple CarPlay became more reliable. I also agree that using a quality connection leads helped. Hope that this helps. Victor
